Mr. Akuila Vuira assumed the position of First Secretary on 9th September, 2013. Prior to his appointment, he was the Senior Assistant Secretary (Political and Treaties) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Mr. Vuira was also the Special Assistant to the Foreign Minister (SAM) and Acted as Principal Assistant Secretary at the Political and Treaties Division. Mr. Vuira received his International Relations and Diplomatic Trainings in Fiji and South Korea.
Mr. Vuira has been part of the Fiji delegation to a number of international and regional meetings, which include the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Egypt, ACP meetings in Denmark, Suriname and Vanuatu, Korea Pacific Islands Senior Officials Meeting in Seoul, Final Negotiations of the Arms Trade Treaty in New York, Ocean 21 Meeting in New Caledonia, Post 2015 Development Agenda in Timor Leste and the first IAEA Regional Meeting in Nadi, the Melanesian Spearheads Group (MSG) meetings and the inaugural Pacific Islands Development Forum.
Prior to joining the Foreign Service, Mr. Vuira served at the Executive Support Unit of the Ministry of Education as an Education Officer/Media Liaison Officer (2005 – 2011) and had taught at Gau Secondary School, Queen Victoria School, Balata High School, St Thomas High School and Nadi College (1998 – 2004). He also worked as a Bank Officer from 1993 – 1996.
Mr. Vuira obtained his Masters in Public Policy with double majors in International Relations/Political Economy and Human Resource and Social Policy from the Korea Development Institute (KDI) School of Public Policy and Management. He also holds a Bachelor of Education majoring in Literature and Language from the University of the South Pacific.
