Nine-fold Increase in Exports to Canada
28 Mar 2007 --- Exports to Canada from Fiji increased nine-fold in January compared to last year. Total imports from Fiji according to figures released recently by Statistics Canada increased to C$1.8m from C$200,499 in January 2006.Growths in imports of Fiji water and canned tuna from PAFCO & Bumble Bee were the main contributing factor. Canned tuna imports increased to $1.5m and Fiji water to $269,000.
Vegetables & fresh fish exports also notched encouraging increases.
“We’re naturally happy with the increase in canned tuna & Fiji water. But we’re happier with the increase in other products especially vegetables & fresh fish as we have been putting a lot of efforts to increase them in order to grow and diversify our exports to Canada,” said high commissioner for Fiji to Canada Jesoni Vitusagavulu.
“We expect to see this increasing trend in exports of vegetables, fresh fish, to continue in the coming months as well as good increases in root crops like cassava & taro and fruits,” adds Mr. Vitusagavulu.
